But, there is another serious problem and that is internet affairs. Today a very high percent of divorces and affairs originate on the Internet. Unfaithfulness usually needs secrecy, privacy, lack of accountability to thrive, and that kind of privacy should not be necessary in a healthy, loving, intimate relationship between husband and wife. When a spouse needs privacy from the other spouse, there is always a problem of one type or another. There is fear, and perfect love casts out fear. There is fear of discovery. Privacy is needed for protection from harm or unpleasant experiences or confrontations or exposure of some outward expression of sin. It is a hiding away of the heart from view.
Ideally, it should be impossible or difficult or very inconvenient to do something wrong on the Internet, and there are good reasons for this. First, it helps keep families away from danger and temptation. Second, really, as loving parents and loving spouses, we should not be getting into rebellious attitudes and demanding privacy unless there is some kind of unhealthy control, and expecting faithfulness is not really unreasonable. It should be our joy to express love by helping to protect our spouses from unhealthy worry about whether we are faithful or not.
